Hearing tests for children in Hampstead
Hampstead Hearing’s team of specialist paediatric audiologists can diagnose and treat hearing conditions in children aged 4 years and above.
We understand how daunting it can be for your child to visit a healthcare professional which is why we’re committed to making the hearing test process comfortable and stress-free for both of you, ensuring your child receives the highest standard of care in a warm, child-friendly environment.
Hampstead Hearing is part of the Harley Street Hearing Group and with a referral by an ENT surgeon, we can see children aged 2-4 years old at our North London Hearing clinic in Golders Green.
CONTACT USSigns your child needs a hearing test
Good hearing plays a crucial role in a child’s development and overall quality of life. Early detection and treatment of any hearing issues are essential for effective communication, learning, and social interactions.
As a parent, it’s important to be aware of the early signs that may indicate your child is experiencing hearing difficulties. Here are some of the most common signs to look out for:
- Often asks for you to repeat things
- Watches TV at an unusually loud volume
- Has trouble with pronunciation or speaking clearly
- Struggles with language-based skills such as reading, spelling and phonics
- Is often overactive, irritable or tired
- Talks at a higher volume than others
- Doesn’t always respond when their name is called
Our hearing tests for children
We offer comprehensive hearing tests tailored specifically for children, using the latest techniques and technologies to accurately assess and diagnose hearing issues in young patients.
2-6 years old: Play Audiometry Testing
By engaging your child in a fun game every time they hear a sound, this test determines the quietest sounds your child can hear.
The sounds are delivered via headphones as well as through a small device that transmits vibrations into the inner ear to allow the audiologist to assess whether any hearing issues stem from the ear’s sound transmission pathways or from the inner ear itself.
5+ years: Pure Tone Audiometry Testing
For older children, the hearing test process is very similar to that of an adult. The audiologist will play a variety of sounds through headphones, and your child will be asked to press a button each time they hear a sound.
Additionally, the audiologist will also assess the inner ear using a small vibrating device placed behind the ear, which helps to identify the underlying cause of any hearing loss.
All ages: Tympanometry Testing
This is a quick test which involves inserting a soft rubber tip into your child’s ear and gently altering the pressure to evaluate their middle ear. Through this, we can detect any middle-ear issues such as glue ear.
Assistive Learning Devices
In challenging classroom conditions characterised by noise, distance, and poor acoustics, assistive listening devices can be recommended to support children’s learning and language development.
Hearing aids for children
If your child is diagnosed with hearing loss, hearing aids can be life-changing. By amplifying sounds, hearing aids can make it easier for your child to hear and understand speech, significantly improving their ability to communicate, learn, and engage with the world around them.
At Hampstead Hearing, we offer an extensive range of children’s hearing aids designed to meet the unique needs of young patients. As a completely independent audiology clinic, we can offer hearing aids from all of the UK’s leading manufacturers such as Phonak, Oticon, Starkey and more, and our expert audiologists can recommend the most suitable device for your child.
Children’s hearing aids come in a large range of colours and styles, so we will work with you to find the one that suits your child’s preferences and ensure they are happy with their choice. We provide ongoing support and aftercare to ensure your child fully adapts to their new hearing aid and continues to get the most out of it.
